Please make your final suggestions on this forum for consideration by your School Council before a student vote on a final shortlisted selection.
See the flyer on the VLE forum for further information.
Many thanks
Mr Bodey
Whatever the names are I think they should be linked to York
agreed! harry potter all the way
A good point. However, some people, I for one, despise the ideas put forward by every one else. so therefore every idea is valid and none should be ruled out. This is not really a discussion about the controversy or our opinion of the names put forward merely a means of suggesting them. We should either suggest better house names that will be voted for or accept the vote.
No matter what name is picked, there is always going to be people that don't like the name. It would be practically impossible to pick names which everybody liked. I think Harry Potter's a good idea =)
But, that will happen with whatever we decide.
in a perfect world everyone could agree to what we choose.
bu we dont have that soooo, people are just going to have to lump it!
haha!
absolutely,
harry potter houses, seriously.
can you imagine talking to someone from another school going "oh yeah, im in gryffindor " hahaha.
it would actually be the awesomist
please please please please, how can anyone say it's not the greatest yet?
i know about people saying it doesnt show our "creative side", but surely people won't judge us by that, but the way we work at school etc etc.
i dont know, but in my opinion, i think it would be fantastic :-P
hope
xx
we wanted
Wyatt, Wasling, Baker and Molyneux
we reckon they should be named after greek gods and goddesses or Gods from different countries that are gods of learning
greek god ideas: Athena, Apollo, Hermies and Artemis
I agree, they're nice names and they sound good
Whatever they are: PLEASE NOT HOGWARTS!!!!!
I fail to see how being in a house with the name of Eoforwic would provide a pupil with any pride. For example imagine shouting that out in support of your team, or after a match or game. Or even going home to your parents, proud that you are in a house with such a name. Hardly plausible one must agree.
thrilling an idea as that is, and i assure you it excites me in many ways, why would you want to do something so unimaginative, insipid and unoriginal. Our school should not be represented by something so conformist. Harry Potter however would show the students have had input, and some charector, and would represent the school in a humourous way that would appease the majority of students most effected by the change, the current year 10's. Something surely that must be considered.
i agree with Abbey....harry potter all the way....and no cheese please what has that got to do with school at all ????
At least the hogwarts names are associated with a school where lots of amazing things happened xD
Abbey, you brilliant woman!!!
I think they should be British sporting legends, like:
Moore, Robson, Hoy, Adlington, Holmes, Murray, Torvill, Dean etc.
you want cheese? cheese.
apart from the fact that the names are quite impractical, it also might not apeal to everyone. can you imagine being proud to be in a house named after a smelly dairy product?
no, not everyone likes harry potter
also the ideas would get dated too quickly and these house names will be around for along time
will this affect the uniform e.g having ur houses emblem on your jumper?
Don't you know we're switching to robes next year? Apparantly seeing the Scots wear kilts, its fine for the school to all wear skirts. I'm sure there won't be too many boys who'll disagree.
(That was a joke)
I don't think Harry Potter is a good idea, and I have a feeling it won't be an option. I personally like the 4 Elements idea, because it is utterly neutral, and can't be taken the mic out of by other houses.
My thoughts are that there should be a little bit of friendly rivalry between the houses, there will be always some that take it over the top, and the less "jokes" or "weak points" in the namings of the houses, the less over the top banter there can be.
And with regard to cheese, do you really want to be in "Stinking Bishop" house?
Adam
i aggree i like the 4elements as well as planets, and i think that the harry potter, although i love the books, would just cause fights and disaster, especially andyone in griffindor and slytherin.i hope other people see my point.
emily
Yes, it will effect our uniform, however nothing too drastic.
I think the main idea was iron-on patches.
cheese
i think the house names should be thunder, river, wind, and shadow
plz tel me wat u think coz i want 2 win
i realy realy realy realy dont want 2 use the harry potter house names, anyway i think there copy righted so u cant
my idea is betta so vote me
Dear all,
Can we please stop this inane idiocy about Harry Potter. Just accept that it won't be Harry Potter and move on. By continuing to mention it you're actually losing the chance to voice some genuine ideas. We know about Harry Potter. We're not having Harry Potter. Live with it.
I would like to put myself down on record as a supporter of the 'Planets and other Spatial Phenomena' movement. I would choose: Black Hole, Supernova, Galaxy and Constellation. Or, if planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Neptune.
Benjamin Kybett
oh ben, live a little!
i think we have all grasped the concept and we are all just playing along although i do think the harry potter houses would be the best for everyone :):):):):)
hahaha
i think many would agree!
the names might be copyrighted but its great publicity so i'm sure they would let us...i think that it shows that we are taking the change with an open mind and its funny and i really think that people won't mind being in Slytherin cause its pretty awesome being in the house that's evil....xD
and um....your names are kinda depressing...there are better ones on the forum xx
the elements idea could work actually!
fire, water, earth and air?
yeah, thunder and shadow river would be a bit weird tho, but good idea!
fire, water, earth and air.
I quite like the idea. each represents different characteristics, can be shown by different colours, etc. it could be a clear identity.
I think they should definatly be planets : Mercury, saturn, Jupiter and Neptune.
I also like birds : Eagle, Owl, Hawk and Falcon
The Gods idea is also good they sound quite cool. I like : Athena, Apollo, Hercules and Zeus.
I really don't think they sould be harry potter because we need something unique and individual. And besides not everyone like harry potter.
it couldn't be zeus as he is thought to be the superior god and this might cause problems. and hercules wasn't a god, he was a greek hero who was sired by zeus.
if we were to have greek gods it should be two female and two male. this would be fair. although i'm not too much of a fan with this idea it would work as emily proposed it: athena, artemis, apollo and hermes. they're gods who are all associated with knowledge and learning.
I don't care whether they are Gods or heroes they just sound really cool.and wasn't athena associated with war!
Plus i don't have any objections with the genders, they were all very powerful and heroes so it doesn't really matter.
she was associated with both wisdom and war
many of the gods had duel patronage

haha, thanks for that? :-P
xx
yeh or we could have the gods of communication from different religions that have lots of gods...like the romans...or the pagan gods etc...cant think of anything off the top of my head though.
there's Hermies from Greek..
: /
i agree. it shouldn't be harry potter as it would show how unoriginal fulford pupils are.
i like the idea of gods & planets.
Plus, the solar system one was good too!
But please, not CHEESE!!
Like in the WITCH books.
Yes, i think this could work. however, people could find ways of assosiationg people's charachters to their house from their connotations. for example:
Earth = 'tree hugger'
Fire = 'bully'
you get ma drift?
To avoid breaching copyright and to keep the idea of Harry potter houses we can slightly change the names.
eg:
Ravenclaw: Ravendor
Griffindor: Griffinclaw
Hufflepuff: Pufflehuf
Slytherin: Slytherout
Easy - peasy ^-)^-)^-)^-)^-)^-)^-)^-)^-):-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D
*ahem*
Me and the little leprechauns (naw, they're real people) on my shoulder think that it should be
Gwiffindor
Ravenpaw
Mufflepuff
Slytherfin
How about periods in the earth's history....such as Jurassic, Cambrian, Devonian and Cretaceous or maybe eras like.....Cenozoic, Archean, Mesozoic and Proterozoic (might be a bit of a mouthful!)
How about famous WW1 battles: Paschendale, Galipolli, Somme and Verdun to remember the tragic loss of life.
NO HARRY POTTER! If we are going to do stuff from fictional franchises, at least make it: Mirkwood, Rohan, Gondor and Mordor.
There are some good ideas here but i know for a fact there not going to be everyone's cup of tea so there are always going to be some objections! for e.g I personally don't like Harry Potter but i know a lot of people do. Anyway i wouldn't mind it to be Harry potter as i know a lot of people like it and if someone says houses i immediately think of those.
However, my personal favourite is the ex teachers one. Wyatt, Baker, Wasling and Carr.
Me again!
Another suggestion: childrens authors!
...umm...maybe...Rowling, Kipling, Blackman and Horowitz. :-)
--full of suggestions! Alaa.
I do also like Fire, Earth, Air and Water. they give houses definition and arent overly girly or masculine.
Spades, Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs? The four decks?
England, Wales, Scotishland, Wales - Four Countries...
So I did! Well spotted! I must be having a blonde moment.
England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland!
Thanks Alaa...
How about we actually choose some decent ORIGINAL names?
Planets? Really? "Oh, what house are you in?" "Uranus". I don't think so.
I quite like the ideas of the teachers. These teachers have made huge contributions to the school over time, and i think that it would be a kind gesture to name it after them, especially Baker.
The originality is the most important section. This shouldn't be a joke, it shouldn't be a cliché.
Harry Potter!? Cheese!? Lame
Name the houses after famous York people:
Dench House (Judi Dench)
Rowntree House (Joesph Rowntree )
Fawkes House (Guy Fawkes)
Auden House (WH Auden)
Other notable York names include:

I think we should have:
Tudors
Vikings
Saxons
Romans

I don't really mind what names, as long as it isn't harry potter names!

hmmm..
im not sure i particulaly like that idea :/ nothing wrong with it, just not too sure i'd liketo be in a house called VIKING
xxx
Here is my final suggestion for the House names. we should name the houses using the word house in the languages: Italian, German, French and Spanish.
Italian: DINASTIA
German: HAUS
French: MAISON
Spanish: CASA
It'll show the school's Diversity. And Diversity is the key to Prosperity. And Prosperity is the road to Enlightenment. And Enlightenment is the boat to Success. And Success is what we thrive to acheieve. And acheivement is what this school, no this COUNTRY is built on.
Thank you.
I like these, none of them are bad so everyone would be happy with what they got.
Claraa
That was beautiful.
It was so good i may even vote for it.
Also there's an interesting point, will the arguments put forward by the people suggesting them, be accompanying the suggestions in the vote?
This comment is for Abbey Ainslie.
Dear Abbey,
I am currently reading your reply to my suggestion and i am honoured, it is people like you that make me proud to say: ' I, Oliver W. Nott, am a Fulford School student!' You have given me hope for a brighter future at this school and I have been deeply touched by your response and feel as if I'm on top of the World. However I am still sceptical, do you truly believe my suggestion has a chance of winning? I personally think my suggestion reflects how this world should work; through cooperation of each and every Country. I don't know what one would call my suggestion - brave? Well brave is a strong word, I would rather use the term Valiant!
Yours Sincerely Oliver W. Nott
P.S. You were commenting on my suggestion, weren't you?
P.P.S. I would also like to thank Clara Wicaksono, for her positive response to my suggestion.
I concede that the suggestion is reasonably good idea. But you could the nauseating paragraph afterwards.
Ollie. The idea is good, however please stop trying to pull using the VT'ing forum! If you are that desperate, I suggest you try using your 'lovely' personality and pull some girls/guys the traditional way, unfortunatly you have missed Valentines Day, however maybe try giving that special person in your life some chocolate and flowers.
In all seriousness though, I like the suggestion, although "House - Haus" is a bit daft sounding, but I like the thinking out of the box! My personal current favourite is "Air, Fire, Earth, Water", which I believe is good as its genderless, and has less ground for mic taking.
Cheers,
Adam Waudby
Benjamin,
After reading your rather hurtful message, i did cry for several hours. However I am now over that and I have a response that will literally knock your socks off. Firstly, i truly hope, for your sake, that your response to my message was intended to be comical, for if it wasn't i really feel sorry for you. Because someone who writes a serious (and rather boring) response to my obviously humouress and very witty banter, must lead a very sad life indeed. Also I find it quite hypocritical, that you should make light of my grammatical errors, when clearly you need to work on your own. I just don't know what ' But you could the nauseating paragraph afterwards.' actually means, have you missed a word or are you just a bit dim? I think you have read far too much into my message, i was merely mocking the hype surrounding this subject. For God's sake, lighten up!
Oliver W.Nott
Adam,
All i have to say to you is: Congratulations! It took guts to write a message like that and I personally found it quite amusing. You obviously understand humour better than Benjamin!
Oliver W.Nott
Abbey,
I hope you didn't misinterpret my message, i was simply thanking you for your compliment in a way that would make you feel happy.
Oliver W.Nott
"It'll show the school's Diversity. And Diversity is the key to Prosperity. And Prosperity is the road to Enlightenment. And Enlightenment is the boat to Success. And Success is what we thrive to acheieve. And acheivement is what this school, no this COUNTRY is built on. "
Excuse me. Nonsense alert. On behalf of myself, Charlotte Brace and Barbara Robinsone I question the statement that prosperity leads to enlightenment. Isn't this basically saying that you are wise and clever if you are rich? Clearly you haven't thought this through. It's actually rather offensive. And the penultimate sentence just doesn't make gramatical sense. Please think harder next time.
Benjamin Kybett,
I would like to be in house viking :)
it would make us respect York's history a little more
Matilda

I approve of the four elements for our house names but I also think that tree names are a good idea too!
For example:
Pine, Birch, Maple, Oak
Thank you!
Hi Jonny
The schools democracy is pretty much the same as the countries! Around five hundred MPs make decisions on Tax, War, spending etc on behalf of 60million people and every 4/5 years we can vote to keep or replace them.
Every year you select your form and year reps and they represent your views to the SLT. They have done this outstandingly this year providing challenge the leadership team and being part of a number of interviews for new staff. The thirty or so suggestions from the forum were all considered and all five of the final shortlist were suggested by pupils, not staff - something which I think the school should be rightly proud of. On top of this, the vote today includes students only and no staff votes - further evidence of the voice students do have here.
Not everybody in government is elected, civil servants are hired in much the same way teachers are hired. So I don't think that in Mr Bodey's analogy you would have to have teachers being elected. This school does give an awful lot more weight to student voice than any other school I have ever worked at. Even down to the hiring of staff. When I came for interview here last year I was interviewed by members of the school council. So actually the analogy works very well indeed.
Hi Tom
All lower school pupils present on the day of the vote did vote. There was a very limited number of spoilt papers (below 10).
Some, but not all, the sixth form voted in the ballot boxes in their common room at lunch.
Hope this helps
Mr Bodey
Thank you to everyone who took part and put forward suggestions. It was certainly interesting reading them.
The School Council have thought long and hard over this before coming up with their suggestions which you are asked to vote on today. Clearly the suggestions will not please everyone but they are ones that were believed to be the best options based on lengthy discussions and consultation.
I must add that staff have not led on this at all and I have not had any input once Mrs savage ruled out my ideas of Benitez, Paisley, Shankly and Dalgleish!

So. They chose the Greek gods. Pity they changed Hermes (the students concerns were, by the way, irrelevant, as the correct pronounciation-i.e. the Greek one- is Er-mis, not Her-mes) to Atlas, who is a rather uninteresting presence in mythology. No offence Atlas.
Although, I'm surprised Artemis wasn't deemed too controversial, considering she is the goddess of hunting.
well.......Atlas was holding up the sky but he had the whole weight of the world to push against as well as the sky so Gorgea could be right in her own little way. xD
still doesn't defeat the fact that he's a titan not a God...so its not Greek Gods anymore so the whole name is just pointless :P
That said, me and my friends were the ones who introduced the idea so its pretty cool
I apologise profusely, Ben, for any lapse into ignorance; the truth is I was aiming for a bit of a-rather pathetic, come to think of it-play on words. And since he barely occupies a passage in my Year 3 mythology textbook (he's mentioned only in Perseus' bit-which strengthens my prior argument) I had limited resources.
But thank you for pointing that out and please forgive me.
The exact same thing happened to me: I was willing, to some extent, to embrace any house I ended up in, but, since I was allocated to Atlas, I have resumed a certain apathy.
