Contrapuntal

Music with two or more independent melodic lines (see polyphonic).

Heterophonic

Music in which the same melodic line is played in more than one version at the same time. Found in folk music, some popular music.

Homophonic

Single tune with accompaniment of chords

Imitation

A melody repeated by a different instrument/voice in which the second entry overlaps with the first (as at the start of a canon or fugue). Typical of contrapuntal or polyphonic music.
