Because we are a maths and computing college i think our house names shoulds be named after computer brands or search engines as some of the other options have already been used for examples the different subject blocks have been named after scientists and mathmatitions

Computer Brands
Acer
Compac
Dell
Toshiba
Sony

Search Engines
Google
Yahoo
Alta Vista
Jeeves

That would be amazing!!

Re: House Names

Have a look at the conference notes on the first page of the forum to see the first ideas from the School Council! Lots of good suggestions - the important thing is that they catch the imagination and that there is input from the students in terms of both suggestions and the eventual selection. A plan for this is also in the conference notes! We won't be doing Harry Potter names!!

Re: House Names

I think the house names should be the building that the houseis basedin, so you'd have Hawking, Germain, Archimedes and Babbage, and you could have a house in each building.

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

Hi Alaa

The Houses will not be in a particular part of school. We did give consideration to this but rejected it for two reasons. Firstly it would be unfair to have one house in a newer area of school (for example, Archimedes) and the other houses elsewhere. Secondly, if an Art or DT teacher were in a House based in Archimedes this would lead to them always having to travel from their teaching room to their tutor room across the whole school - leading to disruption to both. So, the building names will stay the same and we are after suggestions for the House names.

Re: House Names

I would have thought, though, that if you had form in Archimedes block, you'd have a geo/maths form tutor? Maybe I'm just being pedantic but i thought it made sense?

And maybe i'm just being a bit of a fool here, but i dont understand the unfair concept...? :-S

I don't like the idea of the house names being named after the buildings around school. I think the names should be individual, mabey even made up.

depends though, not everyone would like to be called after a planet.
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

I'm not sure planets is a good idea, because there are too many of them. if there's only four houses and eight planets (i'm not counting pluto) then it doesn't work that well. you need something education related right? how about famous people in history? that doesn't really work, but if you went with that sort of them.

(it's hard to think of names. whenever i hear house names I think gryffindor, slytherine, hufflepuff, and ravenclaw....we should just go with that :) )

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

Hi Alla

Basically teachers still need to tutor in the area that they teach in as they do now and that is why we are not placing each house in one of the buildings.

There is a discrepancy in how nice the blocks are too - which would you prefer as your form room A14 or B25? We don't want one house to be regarded as having an unfair advantage by being in a nicer location than others.

Hi Sir, (it's Alaa, three 'a's one 'l' (sorry, i really had to point that out...sorry))

Yea it would kinda suck. And it will be hard because we need neutral ground, something most people are happy with
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

I don't really mind as long as it's not something stupid.

I suppose planets is ok...:-/

I also don't think they should be named after teachers that went here. It's sad when someone dies but i wouldn't want be in a house named after them...

Re: House Names

Mabey we should choose something to do with the city's heritige or street names or something.

Most people when they think of houses they think harry potter but it would be kinda stupid and not very individual at all. Yeh, i like harry potter but think about it, it would be silly.

the city's heritage would be good. at my old school, st.oswalds, the houses there were Ebor, Fulford, Danum and Derwent. i never really considered them, but they go quite well together. maybe something like that would work?
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
no matter how hard you try, it would take fat too long to find neutral ground which everybody likes. there will be sone poeple who hate the house names no matter what they may be. there are more than a thousand students. Neutral ground is gonna be pretty hard to gather from all of them.
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
but neutral ground is really hard to find! it needs to be something that everyone knows and also doesn't sound really over the top. if you think about it, not everyones going to be happy. planets actually sounds ok if you think about it : 'five points to Neptune....'. It could be worse.

even if you just do capital cities, theres too many choices. everyone would want different things.

Pubs

Using the names of the gates around the York city walls (Micklegate, Walmgate etc.)

Famous Yorkshire sites

Names of Streets in York

Hill ranges around York

Rivers

Famous sports people/musicians/artists/authors

Continents

Names related to York’s history (Roman House, Saxon House etc)

Naming one of the Houses the ‘Dennis Baker House’

Planets

Animals

lets be multi cultural!

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
OOOOOH animals. We could have house snakes. Wait a minuite that sounds strange but on the badge you could have a picture of the animal. I still think the planets idea is best though. It would be so cool if we had a picture of the planet on our badge. It would look amazing.
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

how r u gonna have different planets on a badge???:-/

don't get me wrong i like the planets idea and i like reptiles but some people are scared of them.

so Becky s, for u it would be like having a badge of a spider on, or being in the spider house.

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

all planets are different colours, and saturn has rings.

you just wouldn't be able to have both mars and mercury (they're both similar shades of red, if i remember correctly)

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
That's why we choose planets because no one can be scared of planets. I f we chose animals we would choose cute animals. We'd think of planets which look different like saturn, nepture, mercury and pluto. And anyway we would write the name of the planet on our badge as well.
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

everyone has their own opinion of 'cute' i think reptiles are cute (lol) but hardly anyone agrees.

Also, i don't like rabbits, i don't think they are cute, don't like horses either

Re: House Names

Great discussion here - but please make sure that significant contributions are made outside of lesson time, most of this discussion seems to have been held during period 4 which is not acceptable.

We will give all of these suggestions a chance to be discussed - I like the idea of planets and badges but the final decision will be made by all the students, not me! We will not be using the Harry Potter names!!

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

I reckon we shouldnt have anything related to other things. I think we should make the names unique and special. Not planet because thats isnt very intresting and something not Harry Potter related or even inspired because that is like copying off the book/film/author. We should use something we think of. I personally dont like the idea of planets because they are not as interesting to me.

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

yeah that would be really cool!Although if anyone was put in slytherin they won't feel very good about it because in the books and movies that isn't a very good house, and everyone would want to be in griffindor.

Re: House Names

No, no, I reckon that people in Slytherin would be totally cool about it, I know i would! Because to me, it would be cool either way, no matter which HP house your in, because they're sort of famous/well known houses & you can relate to people from the film.

Well, I think it's fab anyway :P

Re: House Names

Less helpful suggestions than the other constructive postings from the same individuals!

Humourous point making appreciated - but let us not forget the bigger picture. This is going ahead as the new structure in September and cynicism/negativity will prevent individuals getting the best from it compared to the benefits that the rest of the school will gain around them.

The minute you change from looking to block the process, you will begin to shape it and gain huge benefit from it, academically and socially!

Re: House Names

Having criticisms of a concept allows a better choice to be made. A decision made jointly rather than one made on a party's behalf (without said party being informed of this decision until too late) makes preferable circumstances for both parties. I'm sure it would be much easier for the party that made this decision if I was to give up bothering to try and change the decision, and easier still if I were to defy all my logic, reasoning, and intelligence by agreeing with the decision.

Those who are indifferent to this decision would not benefit from it, regardless of anybody with the insight to spot the faults with it. Those who would agree with it would falsely assume that they are in some way receiving a benefit from it, regardless of said faults.

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

Hi Cameron

I don't look for it to be easier for me (or anyone else), and your questions and contributions have been almost entirely constructive and appropriate - as you know from my verbal discussions with you. I was more thinking of your perspective for the rest of the year and when we started our enjoyable exchanges I believe I said I would ask you afresh towards the end of the first term next year - I genuniely think you will be much more positive then. To ask you to agree before then would show you a disregard and disrespect that is not in my nature or way of working - of course you are fully entitled to your opinion and it is both fully understandable and well presented. My advice was for you to accept the situation, not agree with it so your constructive queries and advice can help shape the new sysetms - you certainly have much to offer in terms of analysis and suggestions about challenges which will be faced in this change.

Your second paragrpah is unfortunatley skewed and runs the risk of sounding dismissive of other students who disagree with your opinion and I am sure that is not the case.

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
Apologies for not replying sooner. I distinctly remember typing a reply, but must have deleted it for some reason. Oh well, here it is again:

My 'opinions' are based upon facts. It is the manner in which I deliver these facts where you will find my opinion of the matter, though this does nothing to disprove the points brought to light by my insights.

I have no doubt that you respect my opinion and that of my fellow students, which is what leads me to question your decision not to include the students in the sole significant decision-making process. Our importance is further proved by the fact I can find numerous faults in the new system, through the application of simple logic.

My (at times) frustrated delivery of these facts comes due to the fact that these facts have not been properly comprehended, or perhaps overlooked. It is understandable to me that one would become disgruntled at the neglect of logic.

With regards, Cameron MacLeod
In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

Thanks as ever - although I do feel that logic is in the eye of the beholder on this occasion. Glad you are recycling/pasting too - its probably the only way that we can both keep up the exchanges in the hours the day has! I shall catch you for a verbal discussion so that we can both comprehend each others 'facts' although these too may be matters of personal opinion rather than 'logic'.

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
I agree that a verbal discussion would be far easier. I'm sorry if I posted my earlier reply elsewhere, I did search for it, but couldn't find it. If it was posted here it must have disappeared of its own accord, which I'd also apologise for if I could explain it. Also, to judge by your usage of 'I feel', to call my judgment opinionated would be hypocritical.

May I point out that if we had a supernova in our solar system we wouldn't be here. Supernova's are major cosmic disasters that can outshine galaxies. And Prime Ministers would be alright but I notice you suggest Churchill, Major and Thatcher. All Tories. A bit biased, is it not? And I refuse to be in a house called Thatcher.

I think it should be about York/England, I know Jaz said it's a multi-cultural school, but the school is in York? It just makes perfect sense. Also I think that rivers in York is rather boring. I love the Harry Potter books, but it is a bit silly, it's a made up book (however much I want it to exist!).

Famous people from York: Dame Judi Dench, Guy fawkes, John Barry (composed music for some of the early Bond movies) and W H Auden (poet). We could use their surnames: Dench, Fawkes, Barry, Auden.

Past prime minister for England: Churchill, Thatcher, Major, Callaghan.

I think keeping heritage close is good.

Re: House Names

I like the idea of keeping it local - another suggestion at the conference from one student was to use the four gates of York - Boootham, Micklegate, Monkbar and Walmgte which had a ring to it.

The key thing is that students will choose our names - and that will happen in the first three weeks of next term.

Personally, I think the 'Computer brands' idea isn't very good - who would want to say 'i'm in House Toshiba' ? I do really like the Harry Potter idea - but Mr Bodey has made it clear that we are not using those names, which is a shame :-/

Also the whole name idea's of Waffles & Candyfloss is pretty ridiculous - and a bit too girly. Not many of the lads would want to say 'i'm in house Candyfloss'.

I'm like Cameron - I don't have many idea's myself. But the suggestions so far don't appeal to me either - other than Harry Potter :-)

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -

We could simply plagiarise house names from places which already have them, such as Harvard; otherwise we could consider applying a random name generator to aid our decisions.

The main problem is that the names of the houses will need to be 'plain' enough (if anyone can think of a better description, do tell) to be used year following year; therefore they probably won't appeal to everyone.

In reply to Deleted user

Re: House Names

by Deleted user -
Plagiarism is good. Nearly all important writers and thinkers have plagiarised to some extent. I feel we should be up there with the crowd, stealing names like evryone else. in light of this beleif, I feel our houses should be named after famous plagiarists, such as Galileo, Alexander Fleming, Martin Luther King, Einstein and Benjamin Kybett, who steals all his opinions from the good book. Thou shalt not steal, Ben K!!!!

Good ideas for names, How about the houses being named after different trees such as:

Birch

Pine

Oak

Palm

And no matter what I dont want the house names to be taken from harry potter or any other book or film. It kind of says to the world: "Oh those kids in fulford school have no imagination"

Here are more ideas:

Fire

Earth

Water

Air

And more...

Eagle

Owl

Parrot

Vulture

And maybe

Beagle

Terrier

Labradour (I hope its spelt that way)

Shepard

Those are my suggestions.
