    Unit 2 Web Authoring

    Introduction

    In this unit you will design and create a website for your client. You will gain an understanding of the skills needed in building a website and a knowledge of web authoring and the requirments and capapbilities required.


    Learning outcomes
    After completing this unit you will be able to:

    • Understand the range of ways of conneting to web pages and accessing the Internet.
    • Create a website structure.
    • Use the tools and features of Dreamweaver to create web pages and add content to a website.
    • Manage a website.

    Task 1

    Create a presentation to explore what software can be used to create websites. for each of your examples you should briefly describe how the software could be used to create multi-page web sites.


    You should find an example from each of these :
    · Free tools
    · Standard office applications
    · Paid WYSIWYG tools

    Using the template below, create a script and then record an audio file answering the questions about the thee given webstites.

    Task 3

    For this task you will need to create an account at http://prezi.com/, use your school email address for the contact email.

    You should create a Prezi presentation called 'Connecting to the web and accessing web pages'. You must make sure that your presentation covers the points below.

    • How can you access web pages? (eg computer, mobile phone, personal digital assistant, digital television/satellite)

    • How can you connect to the internet? (eg dial-up, broadband, wireless, bluetooth)

    You can add text, images, video, sound and animation to your Presentation. Once you have completed your presentation you should download your Prezi and save it into you Unit 2 AO1 folder.

    Explore....HTML!

    In this task you will work through the presentation 'Introduction to HTML' click on the link below. There are several tasks for you to complete and you should end up with your own examples of using HTML tags. Make sure that you save these examples into your Unit 2 A01 folder.

    Research into relative and absolute paths and use the table below to demonstrate your understanding. You should add a definition and try to find some examples of links that relative and absolute.

    Zoe Ross is the founder of the company  'Charlie & Mabel'. She has asked you to design a website for this new company. If she is impressed with your design she will use it.

    Domain name: charlieandmabel.com and co.uk

    Name of company: Charlie&Mabel

    Brief: Zoe Ross setting up a new business that makes cup cakes and macarons . she would like a website that showcases the products, initially to phone order or with an online form but no payment online until later.

    Description of company/site: Funky, creative, look good and taste good, modern.

    Target market: Core market 18 – 35 mostly female but males interested in unique food experiences.

    Task 1
    Now you have your brief you will need to contact your client to ask them for further information, write down your inital ideas for the project and think about the tasks you will have to carry out and their approximate timings.

    You should record your ideas using the Planning form, make sure that you save all of your planning work into an A02 folder in your Unit 2 folder.

    Your teacher will provide you with a link to a collaborative primary pad which will allow you to extract information and feedback from your client. A word of warning this is a real client, please remember that EVERYthing that you write will be seen, even if it is deleted straight away and the client will not be impressed by misuse.

    Task 2: Introduction to Dreamweaver
    Your teacher will demonstrate basic skills in dreamweaver. Practice creating templates, managing your site, creating buttons and banners, adding pages and editable regions. You will be using all of these skills to create your site so ask lots of questions and practice, practice, practice!

    Task 3
    Now you should have a good understanding of the type of template that you could make and of a good idea of site structure.

    It is time to go back to your Planning Form and decide on a Site Map and Site Layout Design for your real website.

    Reference of sources

    As you are working through your project you should be awear of copyright issues.

    Save the reference of sources template to your Unit 2 folder. As you are working for a real client all of your images must be free from copyright, please record details of sources and permissions.

    Make sure that you save all of your work for this section into an AO3 folder in your Unit 2 folder.

    Task 1

    It is now time to create your website, you should:

    • Create a folder for your website
    • Create a template (to match your design)
    • Manage your site
    • Add editable regions
    • Create any graphics you may require for your site e.g. a banner
    • Create your pages for your website (you should refere to your site map)
    • Add navigation and links to the pages 
    • Add content to your pages e.g. images, text, form, email link etc

    While you are creating your website you should also complete the template at the bottom of this section.

    It is important to test the main elements of your website, for example do all the links work?

    Using the Test table you should record the test that you carry out.

    A04

    AO4: Review

    Task 1
    Now that you have completed your website and tested that it is working your should get feedback from your client. You must decide the best way to do this e.g. you may create a questionnaire using survey monkey or google docs.

    Task 2
    When you have recieved feedback from your client you should respond to it in your review form, do you agree with what she has said? Why?

    You will also need to explain how your website meets the brief and if it is fit for purpose.

    Think about constraints that have you dealt with in this project for example you should identify parameters and constraints that influenced decisions made eg asset manipulation, file formats, compression techniques, permission and subject matter/location, copyright, IPR, trademarks etc

    You should save the tempalte below to an AO4 forlder in your Unit 2 folder.
